Women at Work: Between Handicrafts and Artistic Perspectives
From the 3rd of June to the 20th of December
Women have always worked. However, as work was long defined in terms of production and pay, women’s work was often considered secondary, or even non-existent. Yet, whether in the fields, at home or in workshops, they supported the local economy and played a full part in community life. Mechanisation and industrialisation made a part of their work in factories visible and paid, thereby questioning their place between traditional roles and new forms of activity. Thanks to exceptional loans, the Haut-Beaujolais Ecomuseum presents an exhibition that creates a dialogue between its ethnographic collections and artworks from numerous museums. This cross-disciplinary perspective allows visitors to explore both the reality and the representations of women’s work in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors are invited to follow a dual path: a historical and ethnographic approach, and an introduction to art history through the works on display.
This exhibition forms part of the ‘100 artworks that tell the story of work’ initiative led by Orsay Museum.
